Manual J, Manual S and Manual D
Manual J
A Manual J calculation is an assessment of the heating and cooling requirements, or “loads,” of a conditioned space at specific outdoor temperatures called “design conditions.” In plain English, it calculates how much heating your home needs on a very cold day and how much cooling it needs on a very hot day.
Proper load calculations are required by code and help ensure that your system is appropriately sized for your home, supporting comfort, energy efficiency, durability, and overall system performance. An oversized system, in addition to costing more upfront, can cycle too frequently, wasting energy and reducing comfort. An undersized system may struggle to meet your heating and cooling needs and may rely on expensive backup heat on the coldest days.
At A9 Green, we approach Manual J calculations with the same attention to detail as our HERS Ratings. When we perform both, we can cross-check the models to make sure important assumptions about the home and its energy performance are consistent.
Whether you’re a homeowner, HVAC contractor, or builder, A9 Green can help you understand your home’s heating and cooling needs and make informed decisions about equipment sizing and selection.

Manual S
After determining how much heating and cooling a home requires through a Manual J load calculation, the next step is selecting the right HVAC equipment. Your team selects the proposed equipment and provides the model numbers to A9 Green. We then perform a Manual S analysis to verify that the proposed equipment is appropriately sized for the calculated heating and cooling loads.
At A9 Green, we use manufacturer performance data to evaluate how the proposed equipment will perform under the specific conditions of your home. A heat pump that can provide 5 tons of heating on a mild day may only be capable of providing 2½ tons on a very cold day. If that isn’t accounted for when selecting the equipment, the system may be unable to keep the home comfortable, may rely heavily on expensive electric resistance backup heat, or both.
A9 Green does not design the HVAC system or select the equipment. Our role is to provide the load calculations and independently evaluate the equipment proposed by your HVAC contractor so your team can make informed decisions before installation.

Manual D
Manual D is the industry-standard procedure used to design and properly size residential ductwork so conditioned air can be delivered throughout the home. At A9 Green, we evaluate factors such as the home's layout, required airflow, duct size, duct paths, and system pressure to develop a duct design that supports the selected HVAC equipment. Poorly designed or undersized ductwork can contribute to uneven temperatures, excessive noise, restricted airflow, and reduced system performance.
Problems such as rooms that are consistently too hot or too cold may be related to ductwork rather than the HVAC equipment itself. For existing homes, we also consider the condition and design of the existing ductwork when evaluating an HVAC system. Simply replacing equipment does not always address underlying ductwork issues.
